White smoke pouring from exhaust

Post by JTAC »

I have a 2007 S40 that has a TON of white smoke pouring from the tail-pipe and coolant leaking on the heads.. I was away on a work trip and let my girl borrow it. The oil pan was ripped a few months prior but was repaired. My question: Is it just a blown head gasket or could the engine block be cracked? I live three hours from any foreign repair shops/Volvo shops. Any help is much appreciated.

Wow- I'm not sure I'd let your girl drive the S40 anymore. If it's a cracked block you can do a pressure test in each cylinder to see. They have a tool lending program at most auto parts stores (you buy the tool but you get your money back when you bring it back). If the car drives okay without any hiccups (missing), then I'd say your block is not cracked anyway. Most likely your head gasket is blown. Either way the top of your engine is going to have to come off to replace the gasket.
