Key for Glovebox

Hi there,

I noticed that my ignition key does not fit the glovebox. The key for that looks like a more regular key.

So the question is, is there any way to get a new key that fits the glove box lock? If so, what is the cheapest way?

I dont put anything too valuable in there but might want to lock it anyway.

Probably remove the lid and bring a blank and lid to locksmith. It might not be cheap

My glovebox lock use the same key as ignition lock.
Probably the glovebox was replaced sometimes in the past because they tend to lock themselves.

^^^ either the glovebox lock was replaced in the past - or you have a "valet" key and not a "master" key.

Volvos at that time shipped with two "master" keys - which work all the locks, and one "valet" key, which is a bit shorter and only works the door locks and ignition locks. The thought is that if you valet parked your car, you could lock your valuables in the glove box, give the valet person the valet key, and they could do what they needed to do with your car but not be able to access the contents of your glove box.

You would need to purchase a new master key for your vehicle if you want to be able to lock the glovebox. The stealer should be able to get that for you.

My valet key on my 1999 is a lighter gray than the master key, FWIW

I don't know...i don't have that "vallet key",i have one chipped key and it operates all the locks on the car,including glovebox.All locks are genuine and neither one was ever replaced.
Spare key also operates all the locks.

The master keys will work everything - even the lock on the trunk cover on the wagon. The one valet key will not open the glovebox or trunk cover on the wagon.

My 1999 came with two master keys with FOBS and one valet key

On my P80 cars, the only way to tell the valet key is by comparing with the master - the valet has a shorter groove.

Thanks for the replies, very interesting.

I think mine must have had the glove box door replaced because the key hole is much smaller than the door lock holes and the key thickness would never fit in there regardless how long it was, short or very long. It fact it looks more like a 'regular' key not the 3d type which my vehicle currently has. It looks like it takes a regular 2d key like that which would fit in a padlock or something. Strange, but then again every time i turn around i find something else strange on this car...maybe tomorrow i'll find a button that makes it fly
