P80 FWD parking brake cable fitment question?

Post by scot850 »

I am about to re-install the parking brake on the 2000 V70 project (FWD). It has been a long time since I did one and have a simple question. Do you use any lube (grease/Vaseline) on the 'O' ring seal into the rear hub or must it be a dry fit? I am using a Pro-Parts cable, but I am replacing the supplied "O' ring with a Volvo item as I have heard of issues of the supplied one being too think in diameter.

Appreciate any advice,

Neil.

I used silicone brake grease before installation and packed some more in around the outside. (I also had an issue with the oversized o-ring on a PEX-branded cable.)

Lubricating o-rings is always a good idea, but the majority of the benefit is on installation, so that you don't tear or pinch the seal. If you've already installed it and it went in smoothly, you'll probably be fine.

No, not done yet, but you obviously think the way I do! I will hopefully get back to it in the next few days to finish off the one side which is ready for assembly with everything ready and clean to go.

Appreciate the reply.

Took a lot more than a few days to get back on this. Sorry, but new puppy stopped progress!!

After cleaning and painting the back plates with caliper paint, I re-installed the LH Pro-parts cable replacing the supplied 'O' ring with a Volvo example. A small amount of Vaseline and having scraped the recess for the 'O' ring out, it all went back together fairly easily and the cable popped into place at the axle end with a little persuasion! All went back together fairly easily (well on the 2nd attempt as I forgot to install the plastic protector shield on the back of the dust shield). Have not completed the RH side yet as I am having to replace the 'J' hose and rubber breather hoses at the roll over valve as they are splitting. This has more access without the RH parking brake cable in place.

Have to say, that on reflection, the FWD parking brakes are on par with the AWD in terms of a PITA removal and installation!

Only other comment is that the Pro-Part cables look ok, but are not of the same quality as the OE parts. But they are definitely not a third of the quality, maybe 75% of OE but at a third of the price! I'll have to monitor how they hold up if the car stays.
