So I just aquired an older ladies 95 Volvo 850 with 80K.. Other than some wierd paint work (not even damage, just paint work) and a few odd bits (tires, a clunk in the drivers wheel and possibly a bad charcoal canister or something as I couldn't pump a full tank in it and i smelled a little bit of gas fumes it hought.. otherwise nothing special)...
My biggest issue is the drivers door won't lock/unlock with the remote.. I have a feeling the lock actuator is bad but have no real way to test it... Am I on the right track or? I have arthritis and using keys can be difficult esp when your hands dont function well
I see that door locks are common issues on these cars and i do intended to keep this volvo a long time, so i plan to source new fobs, a new remote box and such as i can find them...

The lock motor is the typical culprit if the rest of the doors are working OK so I think you are on the right track. You have to take the door panel off to get to it but you can verify that the lock motor is getting voltage with a DVM and if it is getting battery voltage that reverses polarity then it verifies that the actuator itself is bad.

Not really a common issue. I have had several 850's and not one bad door latch.
