XC 70 2001....Green Transmission Coolant Line Clips

Hello and thank you in advance for your advice and help. My husband recently started to change out my radiator because it had a large crack. While doing so he did break the green clips for the transmission coolant line so we went and picked up replacement clips and O-rings today. However he's having difficulty getting them to go back into place securely. It seems like it just won't click in all the way almost as if it's a hair to longer not the right size. Is there a trick or a special tool to put these lines back on. I'd hate to have to have it towed just to have the clips for the lines completed.
