Here Kitty kitty!! Which cat to buy when upgrading the downpipe?

Post by biohazrd76 »

Can anyone suggest a good catylitic converter or flux capacitor to match up to my OBX 3" downpipe. I have read the thread here that says to pick a magnaflow but there are several types of high flow 49 state legal units. Im looking to copy the ipd system for less than their 800$. So far im in for 150$ with the dp. And i have a non fart can sport muffler already... So im looking for a cat and a resonator . This is the cat im leaning toward http://www.ebay.com/itm/like/1309512271 ... noapp=true

I've got a 3" Magnaflow race cat 200 cell to shut the check engine, yet to be as less restrictive as possible, smth in the $85 area i think! That and $50 for cutting the DP and welding the cat in there.

Here. this is the identical one I've got!

I guess my bigger question is longevity, does a higher cell count like 3- 400 have a longer life than a 200 cell? I dont want to just go get the cheapest part that fits, (we have all been there). I want a quality cat thats going to last as long as the oem with 20 years on it! Im also hearing people weld up their oem cat to the larger downpipe. But wouldn't this require pushing the rear o2 sensor back some to compensate for higher temps? Just going off the ipd design here...

Can't comment on longevity on the 300-400cells as mine is relatively new but you can ask Magnaflow reps for a guesstimate on it. As for the rear O2, you can extend it (cut the wires and crimp longer cable in it) and the O2 has nothing to do with tuning so it won't affect the way the engine runs. I've had a 2.5" Magnaflow high flow cat (can't remember anymore what cell count) on my past project and it held up nice to the abuse of my turbochargers, from 04 till 2013 when I retired it. I'd say if this one holds up 5-6 years I'm golden.

Thank you rigspgt. Are you running forged rods and pistons with that 19t?

Nope, stock bottom end :)

By the way, is there a reason you're after a 300-400 cell cat? I've heard people have passed inspections with a 200 cell and judging by my nose, I don't have to worry about someone in the back of the car smelling rotten eggs or un burned fuel. I could have gone the easy way with the test pipe (no sniffing here in FL) but I chose to loose a bit of power to stay clean.

Just durability i guess. Still learning whats what with cats. In PA they check CO emissions and all that jazz. I been talking to some of the volvo gurus and they're saying the universal high flow cats are short life 1 2 yrs...and to use my oem unit...?? Im curious about your tune... what is your target boost psi? Methanol injection? Cbv? Fuel pressure at WOT?
