So, being a real man of genius I am not, I managed to drop my front tires into two ruts on a gravel road that allowed a rock to crunch a nice crack into the oil pan of my R............. Dammnnn!

Ok, so that being said, the oil must have run out slowly because it took about 1-2 minutes to get a low oil pressure warning and for me to realize that impending doom was upon my R. I got the warning and pulled over and stopped at a safe spot in less than a minute. Got out to see oil still draining from car, with no line of oil running behind, so I am hopeful I got it stopped in time to save the engine. Any recommendations for diagnosing engine health are appreciated, but I suspect that I wont really know until I get the pan replaced and try to run it.

So, now here is the next question. How tricky is the oil pan replacement on a V70 or a V70R? I may be able to get insurance coverage on it, but not sure if it will cover it or not.

Is it a garage worthy project that a self-trained wannabe wrench turner like myself can attempt easily, or is it better to let the pros do it? In principle it sounds pretty easy, pull off the bolts drop the pan, replace pan and rebolt. Thinking it might be a great father son learning experience project. Thanks for your ideas and hints.

You have to use the anaerobic sealer for this- it's a liquid sealer that is viscous that you roll on to the mating surfaces. It's daunting but not impossible to DIY. I suppose the question is, is the engine toast? Did the temp gauge climb upward during the fiasco? If not, then you might be okay with just a pan replacement. Find a good used one and go from there! Makes sure it's from the same engine.

Basically will be the same as on your engine.

Thanks! No temperature climb, but there wasn't really time to observe, I shut it down pretty quick. Hit the rock, thought I was ok, drove about 1/2 mile, then got red lite in dash followed by low oil pressure warning. Pulled over within a minute or less and turned it off, so I am praying I shut it down in time.

Other than the warning lights/indication, no other issues were noted at all.

I'm not sure the temp gauge will climb within a few minutes even when there is no more oil. Low oil pressure doesn't mean there was or wasn't oil in the pan, it means the pressure was low which may imply no lubrication to the rod bearings. With the pan off, can't really inspect the rod bearings for wear/damage unless you remove them, still look for any play or darkened rod metal from overheating.

So perhaps you won't know the answer until installing a new pan and checking the pressure with the engine running - I'd check it with a pressure gauge, not just with the oil light

Well now! That will be a definite pan replacement. I was going to suggest a temporary JB Weld patch for a half centimeter sized hole which worked for me once with no engine issues, but that is nasty looking.

Yeah what is interesting is I went back and checked the road and there was maybe 1 - 2 quarts of oil on the road max! And when they towed it another 1/2 qurt or so drained on the flatbed. So I kind a hoping there may have been some oild left in the pan that didnt drain because the system ceased bein npressurized. But I dont know enough to know if that could be true or not. Dipstick showed a little oil at the very bottom of the stick
