Oil Filler Cap Will Not Twist Off

Post by bobsjazz »

I'm driving a 2002 S60 non turbo. I went to top off the oil and the filler cap will not twist off. I used 2 hands and all my strength but the cap will not twist off. I understand how the 2 tabs on the cap lock under the valve cover , so a simple half twist counter clockwise should remove it, but it won't budge. For now I'm topping off the oil by using a tiny funnel and pouring it down the dipstick tube. I can't see doing that the next time I do an oil change, it will take all day. I could use a pair of channel locks but the cap is plastic and the metal part might stay on the engine. Anyone else ever had this happen ? I have a 98 V70 and 98 S70 and never experienced this. There has to be a way to get the cap off without destroying it or causing damage to the valve cover. Its not leaking so worst case would be to continue to fill thru the dipstick tube. I'm totally frustrated, any suggestions appreciated.

Get a spare from a junkyard (or see my parts list) and a big pipe or chain wrench and twist that sucker off. Remove any left over parts.Put new one on.

Looks like Mr Hulk is back in town :)
The cap doesn't 'lock'. Try the channel lock gently, and pry with a bar between the pliers and a metal part on engine top. But first get a new cap before removing the old.

Try a strap wrench, a lot less physical damage would occur.

I would wrap it with a bunch of wraps of masking tape or duct tape to protect it and use a big channel lock plier to loosen it. It will probably spin right off. Lefty loosy! A strap wrinch is also a good idea if you have one.

Try to unscrew it when engine is warm.Probably just a rubber seal stuck onto filler neck.It happens usually when seal is not lubricated with oil.Just a thin layer like on oil filter gasket and screw it on.

Are you positive it isn't already unlocked and isn't just stuck vertically? I'm too proud to tell you how long I wrestled with a VW one , once.
