Longevity of HEPU pump?

Post by j-dawg »

I've started putting the engine back together after replacing the valve stem seals and I figured that, at ~60k miles, I might as well replace the timing belt while I have it off. Poking around, I noticed that the water pump is a HEPU unit.

Since I've just pushed the timing belt change off by 100k, this HEPU pump will presumably have 160k on it when I change the belt next (assuming the car is still with me at 365k, which is maybe a bit of a question mark). Would a HEPU pump be expected to make it this far? I actually have already bought an Aisin pump, but it wasn't cheap and I'd just as soon not mess with the water pump if it's fine as-is. Sleeping dogs and all that. I see no leaks and feel no play in the bearing.

The tensioner and idler are smooth and quiet, so I'm not planning to replace those. It sounds like water pump failure is the more common belt-snapper.

I would leave it alone if it doesn't leak and bearing is good.

10 Years, 140,000. I have heard of some failing at 35,000, but they usually leak first.

If it were me I'd replace all of it. You're already in there - the last thing you want to do is have to be in there again...

In order to learn how to fix something, you must first learn how to break it.

Plus at 264k, if you don't install the Aisin pump now you may never get to it. In your shoes I would replace it, even though the water pump job is one of my least favorite when the engine is already installed. Remove the serp tensioner, it is super easy to do and opens up a lot more room for getting your hands in to the work space for the portions where you are working from above.
