Maybe a goofy question, but as I was replacing the radiator in my daughter's 96 850 this morning, had a moment to ponder the Air Pump Solenoid Valve .

Am I correct in presuming it works via pulse width modulation?

Of what function is the dial that sits at the rear of the housing?

It does nothing.It's just a cap of some kind.
'97 850 2.5 20v / fully equipped / Motronic 4.4 from the factory / upgraded with S,V,C,XC70 instrument cluster / polar white wagon
