2012 XC60 T6 US spec.
Found these parts in garage and driveway after wife and daughter drove away in the car. Would like to know what they are before they drive back - do not want them to be in danger. Bolt is sheared off and was found in garage. Cylinder was found about 300 feet away in driveway.
Thanks!

She drove about 20 miles and did not notice any funny noises or handling issues, but then again she wasn't really paying attention. But now she has to drive back and we are concerned.

That nut doesn't look like anything from a 2012 car. It's old and all busted up. I don't think any of that is from your Volvo.
Help keep MVS on the web -> click sponsors' links here on MVS when you buy from them.
Also -> Amazon link. Click that when you go to buy something on Amazon and MVS gets a cut!

OK - but the bolt was found in a garage where the Volvo has been parked for the last 2 weeks. Prior to that our 2006 Chrysler minivan was parked there.matthew1 wrote:That nut doesn't look like anything from a 2012 car. It's old and all busted up. I don't think any of that is from your Volvo.
The nut is 13mm, more likely to be found on the Volvo. I also walk the garage and driveway at least once per day and just found the parts today. I would have seen them before.
The nut has 'teeth' marks on it - on opposing sides (you can kind of see them in the pic) - so I think someone had a vise grips or channel locks on it at one time. The tip of the bolt is hexagonal so it looks like a part that needs to be held while the nut is tightened. Like a shock or strut top. Thoughts? I have owned the car for about 1 year and have not done any of that kind of work. I am guessing the bolt was over torqued and finally sheared off.

Can you be more specific? Do you mean the front sway bar link that connects to the strut? If so that is not it.beigg wrote:Thats lookin like a Chrysler stability link piece.

It is an exhaust manifold stud and spacer. The idea is the spacer give the stud more length to expnd and contract for less rick or breakage or loosening. Oh well.......

They wouldn't have installed that at the factory with anything which would leave those teeth marks you noted. Somebody took that apart for some reason or another. The teeth marks look like what I might expect to see if somebody used something like a basin wrench, together with the stud breakage this implies the nut was most likely over torqued. Do you have all the maintenance records for the vehicle where you might be able to trace when/where/why this was apart? If this was done at a dealer service dept the evidence is strong that a previous service wasn't done 'by the book'. I wouldn't assume any of the studs on that manifold were torqued properly and replace them all. The one that broke off may take a little bit of work to get out before it can be replaced. If this was apart during a previous service there's a chance you might get whoever did it to redo it--properly. And they'll need to install all new studs).
