XC90 Gear Selection Problem

Having had a trusty V70 as a temporary car which I still have 5 years later, i just bought a 54 plate T6 XC90. The car has done 115,000 miles and had a new gearbox 10,000 miles ago. When i bought the car I knew there was a gear selection problem related to the selector.

There seems to be a mis-alignment with the shifter mechanism and the gearbox itself. Drive on the gearbox is halfway between Drive and Neutral on the selector. The selector doesn't seem to sit comfortably in any gear. Manual mode doesnt work and the stick is fairly flappy when you try to use it.

I thought the problem was the selector itself so replaced the whole unit, only to find the replacement unit does exactly the same.

Any ideas? Can you adust the selector cable (in an effort to get the gearbox and selector in sync)

No Gearbox/ECU errors reported.
