2000 V70 base rear parking brake cables question?

Post by scot850 »

Been a long time coming but finally re-fitted the rear rims to drop the car back onto the ground, only to find the parking brake cables are fouling on both rear wheels. Wheels are Volvo OE 15" steels with 43mm offset and skinny 185/65/15 winter tires.

Tried raising the rear axle to see if compressing the rear suspension makes a difference but no. It catches the tire on both sides of the car. I used Pro-parts cables from FCP as they were rated near a 5*. Comparing these with hindsight to the OE parts I still have I see the OE ones have a 'kink' in them from where the bolt in front of the rear wheels whereas the Pro-parts ones are flat and appear to have less length between the rear hub and the bolt mounting point.

Has anyone come across this before? I always knew things were tight at the back on FWD cars but not this tight! I tried a 16" rim with the same offset without a tire and the rim rubs too.

Any suggestions?

I have e-mailed FCP and will order the OE parts and have to exchange them and re-install. Bugger!!

Spoke to FCP who have credited the part value to my account and are shipping Volvo OE cables to me today. In the meantime I guess I will try o remove one of the cables to try to figure out why they aren't working. Only thing I can think of is if, (unlike the OE part) the outer cable sheath passes through the mounting point and so can in theory be elongated to give more cable between the mount and the hub. Can't see how that would help if when you pull the parking brake on, it shortens the cable again binding it against the tire/wheel rim.

I'll update once I find out either a solution or what the problem is.

Thanks Robert. I will go look at the car again, as you mentioning that it brings back memories from when I did the 93 850 cables maybe 10+ years ago. There were no clips or rivets on what I removed, and not sure the cable has enough length to bend that far. From your advice I have had a look a Vida, and it does show a rivet and plastic hoop which I recall breaks really easily. I'll have to go have another look and order up the correct parts if they are needed.

Many thanks,

Neil.

So just been out in the garage crawling about looking at the Pro-parts cables and decided to measure the cable length from the back of the hub to the plastic mount where the Torx screw holds it to the axle. Pro=part item length = 16", old OE Volvo part = 17.5" !! Following on from Roberts heads up reminder, Vida confirms that there should be a plastic hoop and rivet holding the cable to the rear axle to give it clearance. Checking my axle found a slight dimple and cleaned it out to find a small hole for the rivet! Strangely, Vida says that this is only for cars up to CH# 549982 on V70's? Ordered them anyway and will install along with the OE cables when they arrive. Glad to say for once it is not my stupidity at work on the issue!
