So I am doing a service on the headlight washer motors on the project 2000 V70 base. Strange thing is that I stripped a unit that came off the RHS of the car, it says it is a RH motor (so should rotate clockwise when viewed from the front). When testing it runs CCW! So it acts like a LH motor!!
Now I have repaired a few of these from time to time but this baffles me. Is there anyone that knows these motors well enough to tell me if there is something I could have done to reverse the motor operation somehow?
Only thing I can add is that when trying to get the motor to work, I used a 12V 2A battery charger to give power, and initially the motor gave off some smoke like it was over-heating. But after a couple of goes it ran fine with no further smoking. Is there something in the motor that determines the direction the motor turns?
Thanks,
Neil.

I was totally un-helpful here. Should have made it clear, the motor runs in reverse when connected to the car on the RHS!
I only use the 12V charger just to see if the motor runs and to cycle it when testing the unit.
There are 3 wires on the connector. Red, yellow stripe, Black.
Red and black are for motor to run and yellow stripe is used to re-set the motor.
None of the wiring is disturbed during the process, and in this case even the motor was left alone. Only parts removed were the arm shaft, the shaft cogged lever, the 2 large cogs and the small cog for the motor reverse.
As stated previously, the only other comment I can make is the smoky motor initially, but then it cleared and ran well. Is there something in the motor that would determine motor direction that could have burnt out and was the initial smoky period of something burning out? I am about to strip a LHS motor and will check again and compare. I always mark the position of the drive cog for the wiper arm and lower arm in relation to each other to ensure I return them to same point. Only thing I can't tell in this case is if the motor was not at the '0' position at start up as the arm had it's splines stripped so can't tell where it was in the cycle. I suspect it was not at the start of the cycle as the marks on the arm drive do not now line up with those I made when disassembling.
Another of the many weird issues I seem to find on my cars.
Neil.

Well, like many things on these cars they prove you an idiot without explaining why. Took the LH original motor for this car apart and compared it to the RH original motor that was running now as a LH motor and can't be sure what determines a left and right operation. Re-built the LH motor replacing the internal fuse with copper wire. Tried the motor and much smoke was produced and again cleared. Reassembled and tried on the car. Blew the main wiper fuse. Guess they are on the same circuit!!
LH wiper shaft on closer inspection is bent and overloading the unit. Called it a day and junked it.
Re-built the weird RH-LH motor and re-tried it and now it is running correctly. What?!!? Oh, well. At least it runs correctly but now have 3 re-built motors without the protection overload fuses. I tried cleaning them by gently rubbing them on a piece of fine wet/dry but nothing happened. Motor turned over a couple of times and stopped. Need to carry spare 25A fuses particularly in winter here just in case wipers freeze!
Back to other repair fun.....!
