98 V70 black strips on roof and down A pillars - Paint

The black strips on the roof are starting to shed on my car, exposing the metal strip below and also exposing the yellowish adhesive.. The idea I've come up with for dealing with it is to strip them to bare metal, rough them up a bit and then paint them with truck bed liner paint. Do you think it would be easier to do this with them installed on the car or would it be easier to remove them? It looks like getting the yellowish adhesive removed will be a challenge, as it doesn't seem like it wants to come off.

they take about 2 minutes each to remove- they are held in with clips I have sprayed them with plasti coat with some success they should not be glued down-

Thanks for your response but you didn't answer my question. You stated that they're easy to remove and I already know that. The question was are they easier to paint on or off the car?

I agree - probably on but was hoping someone who had actually done it would comment. The rubber seals down both sides make it a bit tough to clean them up without damaging the seal and it also makes it tough to get everything covered in paint.

I have painted them while on. Most of my time was spent on prepping the car with painters tape and paper to prevent over spray.

I took mine off to paint them. Less worry about damaging the car paint during prep, and no need to worry about overspray. You do have to be careful to avoid bending them while prepping, though.

I think skloon actually, though indirectly, did answer the question. If it takes a couple of minutes only to remove these pieces, painting them off the car would likely be the easiest solution. Seems to be the consensus opinion.

I wouldn't paint them on the car easier to sand and paint with them off- no masking required- odd that yours are v70- the later strips don't seem to flake as much

Mine are flaking badly. Very badly. Atlanta is hot as heck in the Summer (compared to Canada) and the hot weather can go from May to November. According to the forecast it may be as hot as 86F here tomorrow. The heat and UV rays bake plastic and rubber parts. Oddly one side is much worse than the other but they're both bad.
