Advice on possible suspension/engine issue

Post by davsanto »

I have a 1998 C70 Coupe with 153K miles. It was purchased about six years ago and I am the third owner. It is used mainly by my son during the winter as he drives his 2011 C30 the rest of the year. It runs very well and has some minor issues that we take care of as we go. There is one issue that I am not sure how to diagnose or fix. The front end seems to “crash” over bumps during low speeds – 20 to 50 mph. On the highway it is smooth unless it hits a large bump but the “crash” is less noticeable. I recently drove the car from NY to VA around 300 miles and no issues and got about 30 MPH (for reference). The struts and shocks (KONI FSD) were replaced when the car was purchased. The end links and the strut towers have been replaced in the last few years. Last year I put in the IPD sub frame bushing inserts which firmed up the steering nicely. The car is a nice old car that we’ll keep but the “crashing” issue should be resolved. Motor mounts, springs or suspension components – or is it just age? Your input is appreciated.

Sounds like your sway end links.

+1 on that. Even one of those nuts a little loose will cause an unbelievable racket.

Yes those are common issues - thanks for the input - The links were replaced within the last few months. In my experience when they go it is more like a rattling sound.

Yeah - clunk and rattle. The crash you describe - is it more like a bunch of heavy tin cans, sort of?
