Hi - I have a 96 US spec 850 wagon with tracs and the 5 speed manual gearbox. The gearbox has developed a ticking sound at highway speeds in 4th and 5th gears. While driving it sounds as though the ticking noise is coming from the tires. However, with the car on a lift, the sound is clearly coming from the gearbox. Does anyone have any thoughts on what might be causing this and how long before it gets significantly worse? (it's not affecting driveability at the moment) The car is with me in the Middle East until June '18 while I'm on assignment. There are Volvo dealers here, but none of them have parts for earlier cars. To fix this, I'll need to order the parts from the US and have the dealer install them. No idea what parts are needed.
many thanks for any responses.

Have you replaced your transmission fluid? And transmission fluid leaks from the axle seals?

McKinney..I would be tempted to just drive it and fix it back here where parts/used transmissions are readily available and cheap. If its a higher frequency tick it probably isn't serious yet

Are you really sure this noise is coming from the transmission? I would maybe try to pinpoint again and see if the axles could be the culprit here. In my mind, if something in the tranny would fail it would make more of a whining/ grinding kind of noise.
Just a thought.
