Ever wondered what makes these items tick?
Here's a Youtube video of a complete disassembly of a Zexel compressor, prompted by JDS60R's comment about "turning the compressor by hand during vacuuming to make sure all the chambers are evacuated". How many shops do that? What do those chambers look like? I wondered. And how does turning it by hand make a difference?
Well here it is: The chambers are actually 3 bores with pistons that run up and down in them (actually forward and back along the horizontal axis of the installed compressor). The pistons ride to and fro on an oscillating platen, very clearly shown. The demonstrator is not me, by the way.
Next, the accumulator, receiver/ dryer. It serves 3 purposes, as explained on this page, with cutaways that reveal the innards.
