I can't for the life of me figure out what ECU I have. 99 S70 T5m

Post by Levinicus »

From what I have read, it seems that the Motronic 4.4 was used ONLY in 1998 model year Volvos. Is this correct? If so, what ECU was used for the 99 model year? My S70 was built late 98 and sold as a 99 model year, complete with an ETM. I've been searching, but I feel like something has gone over my head.

That is motronic 7.01. Immobilizer encoded to integrate code lock to ignition key chip read by immobilizer control unit using the ignition lock carried antenna induction unit. The ETM is operated by its internal module with opening commands issued by ECM.

That sentence broke my head though.

This means that the ECM in the car can't be changed without Dealer or fully equipped indy shop doing the software reload that synchronizes the anti-theft key imbedded chip info into the ECM. Xemodex is a company that take a used ECM and clone it to work. Doublebug and Yagger may have some other alternates too.

What is it you're thinking of doing or changing?

It might be good to read the 1999-2000 "bastards" thread

I was searching to see if there is software available for DIY tuning. I am working towards stage 0 right now and have a short list of mods to follow. I might need to rebuild the turbo so I was considering the 19t upgrade, but I don't want to just wing it... I want the car to be well tuned to whatever hardware I put in. A coworker has software on a laptop for tuning his Subaru on the fly, and I've been talking to him about car mods. He strongly suggested finding software to tune the car myself rather than sending the ECU off, but it appears my S70 is one year too young to benefit from the M4.4 tuning software available. I looked around and it seems that there isn't any tuning software for the M7. Am I wrong?

The 99-00 model years are called the " bastards" since they transition the P80 to the P2 chassis.

They are driven by superior people of course. That makes us special. I suspect little tuning has been done on the bastards since they are already superior.

The chipped key communicates ONLY with Immobiliser UP to CAN protocol cars...then immo sends "green light" to ecu UP to Me7.

@ Levinicus
Motronic 4.4 was introduced back in '96 in 850 and in '97 ONLY Motronic 4.4 was fitted in 850s.Also s,v70 from '97 and '98 had also Motronic 4.4 for both....turbo and non turbo.
Me7 was introduced in '99.
Chipped keys for 850s were introduced also back in '96 for EU cars.
'97 850 2.5 20v / fully equipped / Motronic 4.4 from the factory / upgraded with S,V,C,XC70 instrument cluster / polar white wagon

The cars that use ME7 are too expensive and complex and not popular enough for a really sophisticated tuning ecosystem to exist like it does on more popular tuner cars. We get excited when someone starts selling something on eBay like a heater core, but there's like 9999 $400 junk turbo kits for your Integra and that's where it starts for cars like that. Nobody's gonna figure out convenient tuning solutions for old Volvos when there's probably not more than a couple dozen people in any given city with the interest, means, and inclination to actually try upgrading.

It works out for internet businesses because we really don't have any other choice. I've heard a lot of good things about Hilton Tuning, and someday when my car stops being a rolling collection of minor issues, I'll get something mild from him and shred my precious CV joints.

I did run across someone in PA who did a AT To MT swap on a 2000 R ? And rechipped an ME7 car recently.
