lifter noise?

Post by loosenut »

question for everyone..
1999 v70 xc awd 2.4 lpt
while in park or neutral the motor revs and sounds fine, no extra or abnormal noise.

while driving i hear a noise that SOUNDS like a bad lifter.
i have been listening to this noise for a few months. no one at the shop heard it.
i changed out mt stock cat con to a magna flow cat con and NOW the noise is very noticeable.

only under load. Does anyone know if a turbo can make a pinging niose? Or maybe the cam timing valve is out of sync.

it almost sounds like detonation.

Anybody i could use some feed back.

thank you love this site.

Unlikely that the timing is out. I don't think the cam sensor will even allow the engine to start if the timing is not within spec. If you're suspect, remove the timing cover and crank the engine over by hand and make sure all the marks line up.
The turbos are not known to make a pinging noise. If the turbo is making a noise like that, there's probably something that got into it. Not good.
You mention detonation... what kind of gas are you using?

Check the front right by the radiator - there should be a solenoid there that may/will tap when the engine is warm and sounds horrible. I believe it is for emissions.

Any chance you can get us an audio or video clip?

I have had this sound for over a year (probably had it ever since i bought my 96R but didn't hear it because the windows were up all winter) and i believe it could be a collapsed lifter. I tried alot of things and talked to a volvo mechanic and he said a valve job might be on the way, but said not to worry because our cars can run with that for quite a while.

Some people believe this could be from ba oil pump o-rings even of the oil pressure is good and some say the inkectirs can be pretty loud. But the injectors probably wouldn't be audible only under load.

If you have the o ring failure on the pickup tube port, pickup tube, or the piping to/from oil filter housing in sump then what you describe can occur. The oil gets aerated and the foamy oil allows tappets to be "squishy" since they are not hard with solid oil. If you have no noise idling after you have run it for a long time then the o ring issue is less likely.
It could be detonation/pre-ignition. If that is the case the knock will be load dependent and should be quiet at the offending RPM range when going down a slight grade and noisier up a slid grade and quiet up a steep grade when enriched mixture and less timing advance suppresses knocking.

Clemens: has your oil pressure been measured with a screwed into block gauge with warmed up engine?

I've noticed on my car the purge valve does quietly tap when the engine is hot. My cousin and I were recently looking for a knocking sound near the radiator on his car, and we found that the purge valve was the culprit.
You won't hear it unless the car it idling, and you are unlikely to hear it inside the car.

Same story with the injectors. You probably won't hear them while driving. If they're loud, chances are you just need a new fuel rail damper.

I had my indie do it. He said it should be 3.5 bar but he measures 3.0 i guess that is within okay for 200.000 miles.

Does this noise follow engine RPM under demand or does it follow the speed the car is moving under demand?

Any chance of audio/video? Odds are someone will hear it having fixed that exact same sound and be able to give you more. YouTube is free :)

On my old v70 I had a sound similar to bad tappets, I haven't heard bad lifter noise before but would imagine it sounds roughly the same, I was convinced it was timing or oil flow related, turned out to be the heat shield over the turbo

What was wrong with the heat shield to make that sound, was it loose?
