Probably a bad plug that's worn, that will crackle.

Any music from the 1970s is also hard to distinguish from static. Ok, that was a bit harsh.

The sound is like buzzing that comes and goes, so it might be a bad spark plug?

Have you tried a different cassette adapter? It's probably the plug on the adapter. I have one I occasionally use on my SC-901 and it works fine.

All the static I listen to on my 901 comes through nice and clear

I demagnetized the cassette adapter and the problem went away
