2011 XC90 6cyl - Check Engine Light P0087 Error Code

Post by nogoodusername »

Hello,

I'm hoping someone might be able to help me with troubleshooting the P0087 error code with check engine light on on my 2011 XC90 6 cyl AWD. I was driving on the highway with cruise control set and going downhill at about 65 mph when the engine started revving but not accelerating no matter how much pressure I put on the gas pedal. I pulled over and shut the engine off and the same thing happened twice more before I got home. If relevant, the messages section on the instrument panel told me I had about 30 miles to empty gas tank. I'm wondering what steps would be necessary to diagnose this code or whether the information I provided would give you a diagnosis. Thanks for your help!

generic P0087 = low pressure at the fuel rail, I'd start with, when was the filter last changed? then work through pressure testing the system.

edit, yeah that's relevant if you were sucking air. After you filled back up, has it reoccurred?
Current Volvos:
1998 V70 T5, 112k sat 5 years, still in mechanical coma (finally at the top of the pile )
2004 XC90 T6 AWD: 186k, 60 on transaxle ( traded in )
1998 POS70 N/A: DD/training aid, 236k but really about 240k, I think...ABS module( passed on to son who sold it)

I know I'm a little late to the game, but thank you for your reply -- I had thought my post didn't work. Changed filter (and haven't run tank that low again) and problem hasn't recurred.

HI Nogoodusername,

Unfortunately I can't cross the PO code for you however if you could provide the Volvo specific code I may be able to shed some more light.

From my experience however, the Fuel Pressure Sensor could be the culprit.

You would need a scan tool to diagnose by reading the system pressure both from the scan tool which is referencing the sensor and compare that to a fuel pressure gauge in which you connect to the shrader valve on the fuel rail.

The sensor is very easy to replace and located right on the end of the rail itself.

I hope that helps and good luck.

If you have any questions feel free to reach out at [email protected]

Thanks

Jason
