Farväl gammal vän (Farewell old friend)

Kind of bummed. Decided to replace my aging '95 854T with a 2013 Ford Focus today.

This 850 was purchased new by my sister and she used it for 3 years. It then became the "first car" for her 3 daughters, each in part. After that, at 198,000 miles it became the "first car" for 2 of my daughters, each in part. I had a stint in it for about 25,000 miles.
This car has served all of us well.

Has 257,000 miles on it now. So many "wear items" are due for replacement that I just can't justify the cost. The body is excellent. My youngest has been using it but she will be commuting to college next fall. She'll have a 60 mile round trip and the location of the school she's attending makes my wife and I want her to be in a newer car. She cleaned it up this past spring and took the attached photo.

The dealer that we bought the Focus from had no interest in the 850 so I'll either try to sell it for a few hundred or donate it. Regardless, it has to go. I just have too many cars.

At first, I didn't like this car, but it really grew on me over the years. I'll miss it.

They serve you well but when they no longer make sense, it makes sense to move them to a new home.

My kids came home in my 99, and its going to kill me when I let that one go in the next 2-3 years, maybe sooner.

Certainly out it up here in the Classifieds for an aficionado, it might feel better to get it to someone local here who won't flip it.

Thanks.
I think I will do that in Volvo forum classifieds after we take delivery of the Focus. I won't do craigslist or the like since I don't have the patience for tire-kickers at this point in my life.
It would be nice to see it go to someone who can use a good chassis. Kind of like what I used to do with 140s years ago.

Wife says 2 weeks on the forums and then it gets donated. I can't argue with that.

I hope you have a good sendoff planned for your 854T! I'm always speechless when I hear of a P80 hitting 250K. I feel like for every K we get our of our car, the Volvo gods exact their revenge on me for the previous owner's sins!

Thanks for posting this. It certainly sounds like the car has played a special role in your lives. Yeah, they're just cars. But sometimes they're more than that!

Hi alschnertz,

I might be interested in your 850. I am in need of another vehicle at the moment, and another '95 854T might be a good thing. I sent you a message, but figured I'd leave a post here in case that didn't get through.

Cheers!

No, I just remember that phrase (or something close to it) was painted on the last PV 544 that came off the assembly line in 1966.
It is a fitting sentiment for me too.

Greetings. I understand your concerns of your daughter driving the car for school. My daughters school is 400 miles away. I definitely would feel safer for our "baby girls " in something less expensive to maintain . I'm looking at Focus for my girl. Be sure to get AAA, and give her a card. Or add roadside service to your insurance coverage. AAA about $100 a year, insurance roadside about $5-10 a month. Cars have a price. "Our babies " Don't.
