Where is the External Fuel Filter on 2007 S80 Located?

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

Where is the External Fuel Filter on 2007 S80 Located?

Post by 2007volvos80 »

Hello,
I took my '07, S80, 3.2 in for its 120,000 mile service. According to the owners manual, the fuel filter should be changed at this interval. However, my mechanic can't seem to find the location of an external fuel filter. I also called the closest Volvo dealership and their service / parts folks were not able to help. Is there a chance that the only fuel filter on this vehicle is located inside the fuel tank?
Thanks,
Eric

There is one in the tank. Change it when the car quits running. The primary filter is the strainer on bottom of pump. The filter you could change, at great difficulty by feel and with risk that the accordioned connector tube fractures from handling, only catches brush particle wear from fuel pump to protect injectors. Fuel filters are much different from in the past. Some Volvos, and many other brands also, have filters that are not serviceable and are a part of the sending unit/fuel pump assembly. You change them when the pump gives up. Others, like yours have one but it is tucked away in tank and has plastic plumbing with fragile latches usually requiring some tool for the hose fittings.
If the fuel filter fails it causes high speed passing or steep hill climbing issues before anything else occurs. Fuel filters get blamed but do not cause bad idling, poor MPG, lower speed/lighter throttle misfire, or much of anything else other than the high speed-high fuel flow demand issues.

Thanks so much for the information, I'll return the unused part to FCP.
