How to "read" P80 front end noises...

Post by theWIFES_S70 »

I can't believe I am the only one driving a 20-yr old car who's trying to pin point noises... (Though, maybe I am!)

I was thinking this would be a good place to organize and collect known noises and their respective corrections. Of course, trying to pinpoint noises I imagine can be like falling into a rabbit hole. Nonetheless, we persist...

As far as I can tell these are the following front-end suspension parts that can fail and cause noises. I don't think we will be able to create a taxonomy of noises here. But I think we can think about which noises are more prevalent than others, where to start first, what rarely fails, etc. I truly hope the experts here will chime in.

Components and their respective front end noises:

Strut failure
Strut seat failure:
Strut bearing failure:
Strut spring failure:

Inner tie rod failure:
Outer tie rod failure:

Sway end link failure: The KLUNK over bumps
Stabilizer bar bushings:

Control arm bushing failure:
Control arm ball joint failure: The KER-FLUNK over bumps

Front engine mount failure:
Rear engine mount failure:
Side engine mount failure:
Transmission mount failure:
Firewall engine mount failure:
Upper torque mount failure:

Subframe bushing failure:

CV-joints failure: The CLICK-CLICK-CLICK, occurring on turns and in precarious situations, while driving straight
Wheel bearing failure: The WHOOP-WHOOP-WHOOP, increasing in intensity over time and speed
Brake debris shield: A GRATING Metal-on-metal screech
Brake calipers
Uneven tires

Power steering rack failure:

I think you have a great idea here. As our cars age they definitely aquire strange noises. Though my car is a P2, last year it hit 12 years old and I would love to have had a place to go to identify what to look at to get rid of the annoying noises that suddenly plagued my car. I simply replaced everything from rack-and-pinion to springs. Not one part is original and finally the pop turning right while braking is gone. I am sure I spent twice what the car is worth to others, but I'm happy. I hope this thread takes off. June

The noise caused by strut spring failure would be quite horrifying I'd imagine, not to mention the corner it fails on collapsing.

I'm going to be inspecting/replacing my engine mounts in the near future, no noises as such, more a strange sensation of something touching something that can be felt through the clutch pedal when depressed and turning the steering wheel.

I think the stop lock buffers on the wishbones could be added to your list.

Great idea I must admit, if you could put a video up of the sound each component can make when failed you would have the ultimate database for these nuisance noises

Just to add a rear end noise:
AWD between rear seats - klunks when going from movement in reverse to forward and vs versa - more likely than not your torque tube bushing needs replacement.

I will see if I can get some good audio of this... Like the idea of hear it and identify it...

I have been very interested in doing this, and I’m glad someone else is posting. I have a portable Zoom microphone and I’d love to take it with me for a spin and post or send an MP3 to someone who could analyze the noises and then we could isolate and loop them. Then we could make a YouTube video called “Volvo front end noise diagnosis” and call out the different components while playing the looped sections of the recording.

Let me know if anyone is willing to work on this with me, including the OP. Maybe it would be helpful if several people made recordings of the interiors of their cars so we’d be basing any diagnoses on an aggregate of sounds and not just one car.

I'm up for it. Happen to have a TASCAM DR-05 audio recorder here. I can do the audio/video editing. Figure we make the video, toss it on YT and also give the same stuff to Robert as I think he'll be able to incorporate it into a video of his that will get better exposure - assuming he's got the time to do it.

Trick is for us to get enough different noises together. I hope to have no additional ones in the near future - beyond the torque tube bushing. Since I'm parked on packed snow right now, I can just about guarantee you it will make the noise the next time I move it in reverse.

I think we need three definitive sound files to begin!

Bad front sway end link clunk - that overbearing, depending clunk-clunk that occurs when you up and down a speed bump.
Torn spring seat thunk- that clunk that sometimes disappears, but appears on some turns/bumps/acceleration
Control Arm bushing ker-flunk- (though, the wheel wobble is probably a better way to figure that one out)...

Really hope to see some sound files for this thread!!

Get your terminology correct

Strut failure Become bouncy and eventually will start clunking
SPRING seat failure: Easily tested, NEVER LET THIS GO or a complete failure can result in a minor disaster plus you will need a new hood!
Strut bearing plate failure: Rare, groaning, squeaking and I suppose can seize up.
Spring failure: Rare on P80s but you will know it if one snaps!

Anyone know which files the forum likes? WAV? (ick) or MP3?
File was too high gain - sounds like an explosion, will re-record tomorrow.
