I HAVE A 1999 V70 XC AWD 2.4LPT
THE 6TH AND 7TH NUMBERS IN THE VIN ARE 56
MY QUESTION IS.......IS THE CYLINDER HEAD OFF OF A 2000 V70 XC AWD WITH THE SAME 6TH AND 7TH VIN BEING 56....
CAN I USE THAT HEAD?
I HOPE SOMEONE KNOWS OR CAN HELP.

check your actual engine type on the front timing cover (Right hand side of motor) It could be a B5254T or B5244T(x) use that info to cross-check with the 2000 motor. They made some changes during this run regarding lifters, VVT, valve stem sizes. All things that could affect interchangeability.
edit-also check with Clearwater cylinder heads for info, it's their stock-in-trade.

Current Volvos:
1998 V70 T5, 112k sat 5 years, still in mechanical coma (finally at the top of the pile )
2004 XC90 T6 AWD: 186k, 60 on transaxle ( traded in )
1998 POS70 N/A: DD/training aid, 236k but really about 240k, I think...ABS module( passed on to son who sold it)

Sorry to all for using all caps.
Was on the computer at work we write all work orders in caps...my apologies..
Thanks for the reply...I flaked and didn't even think to look at the timing cover...and yes I see the lifters are solid and the valve cover has two rows of torex plugs that my 99 does not...the head is not the same in a few aspects as well as the vvt valve different part numbers...
Thanks again..not sure why when looking for a complete motor "they" match up the 6th and 7th vin..
Im guessing that the whole motor may work. Only not just the head...
Thanks again hope this helps someone...

It won't make much difference as the piston height clearance and fly cuts in pistons between B5254T and B5244T are the same. Consider it an upgrade to go to the latest head. The same timing system is used and cam sprockets have the same number of teeth.
Afew years ago I put a 1999 head on an 850 20 valve block. There were no issues as pistons had the same deck height and flycuts.

Hello hello. Does this mean I might be able to use the top end of a moto from my 99 v70 t5 (B5234T3) and pair it with the bottom end that's in my 98 V70R (B5234T6)? Trying to find out what would need to be done with regard to the vvt as it isn't present in the 98. Looks like the distributor will be able to be installed at the end of the block if I'm not mistaken, but wanted to check about the vvt or any other issues I may run into, as I can't quite seem to find any info that addresses what I'm trying to do just yet.

Nope!! Not doable without considerable and expensive modification.SwedishMadeFunBrick wrote: ↑30 Sep 2023, 21:23 Hello hello. Damn the luck. I have my daily driver 98 V70R (saffron of course) that gave itself an interference issue from what looks to be a bad water pump. (Replaced with aisin kit roughly 20xxx miles ago by previous owner) out of the blue as I turned onto the street of my work. So that was fun pushing it into the parking lot. Though it was admittedly a hard to question excuse for being late. This of course came after just finishing the body work and a pretty good first attempt at a respray with factory matched paint 2 days prior. Guess the water pump didn't like being t-boned and decided it was done.
Anyway, I've also got not 1 2 or 3 but yep, 4 different B5234T3's sitting at my house doing nothing. So deep down I knew there was no way that I could use those heads. Too convenient.
Just for curiosity, what all would that entail as far as mods to use it, and is it all because of the vvt?
I've got a good amount of credit at a local junk yard that doesn't expire. Time to keep an eye out and hope they get some pre 99 Volvos in. They've been scarce at that place though thus far
Thanks for the confirmation by the way.

You would have to figure out how to close off the oil ports on the VVT hubs amd the turbo oil banjo on the block.
NA filled turbo valves are no longer available so you need to use Inconel valves and śoméoñe who knows how to grind them
Maybe drill and tab the distributor mount bolts but that’s not a biggie
