cheap 2000 t5 with transmission problem..

I am looking at a very cheap 2000 v70 t5 automatic wich they say 'doesnt always change gears smoothly'.
Unfortunately I can not touch or try the car.
The car looks nice. Has electric seats, leather, phone, All the options.

I know a lot about my 850 now. But have 0 experience with the newer model v70.
What can I expect? I read a lot of problems with these boxes. But cant really find 1 clear answer.

The diy garage I always go to has the proper machine to do the full oil flush.

Anyone have an idea? I know its not much to go on

edit: the car has 225000km on it.

Sounds a lot like mine. I think I lucked out with it coming back to about 98% drivable with a full flush, 2X now. I'd need a Valve Body to get the last of the hiccups out. In hind sight, that would have been my first option, but live and learn.

If you have access to the flush unit, do it. Worst that happens is that you don't get it much better and you sell it for your cost or part it and profit!!

Check FCP... They have a killer deal on the Idemitsu fluid that came OEM in the trans. It's like an elixer!! Mine loved it and ran awesome after giving up on the Toyota T-IV fluid that everyone loves.

I read a lot about the valve body and these trasmissions in general in the mean time.

These transmissions seem to have been a huge pain the #@%.. Sad..

Yes. They flush them well. My mother has a VW golf 3 automatic wich was just flushed there. It shifts perfectly now.

Your better off in my opinion. When I traded my 1998 V70 T5 2.3 automatic in late 2001 my dealer steered me away from buying another V70 into S80 because the automatic in the 2001 at least 70 series cars were dying new and the S80 had a complete different transmission without the problem.

That was my salesman at the Volvo dealer who had sold me several new cars said don't buy this one and my mechanic at the same dealer verified not to buy the 5 cylinder automatic for that time.

Of corse 14 years later I find MVS where everyone thinks my car has the faulty from the factory transmission. LOL. I simply would stay away from a 5 cylinder automatic from 99 through at least 02. The 5 cylinder turbo is leaps and bounds better with a standard anyway. Any Volvo is better than a non Volvo. June

The automatic trouble started with the 2001 model year, I don't think the 2000 was bad. It was a combination of a new trans and the neutral stop software which bumped the transmission between drive and neutral at stop lights.

I was ordering a 2002 so either the dealership was unsure of the coming 2002s or possibly some early 2002 cars may have been effected. Good to finely know why and inform potential buyers of that era 5 cylinder automatic what to avoid. June

There were three generations of the AW55 5 speed automatic ((AW55-50SN for FWD cars and AW55-50 for AWD cars)) and only the 2001-2 got the bad one - fixed by model year 2003. Per the thread, they do NOT interchange.

If you got the software upgrade (removal of neutral stop) you were ok with a 2001-2.

Correct. The '01-'02 are the ones to watch out for, more so the 2001. '99-'00 still had the AW50 4 speed, and seem largely OK. They did not have the hated neutral-stop feature.
