Just got loud!

Post by jenkinskg » Sun Jul 09, 2017 7:40 am

my 04 c70 just got loud up top behind the engine, I am thinking the way it went cracked ex manifold.
Need to get back there and see for sure.

I am hoping it is just the flex pipe.
Will take off sheild and see maybe tonight, working right now, may need to wait for morning

The most common spot for the exhaust to break is a seam at the catalytic converter, but you can usually tell because the noise sounds like it is coming from right under the driver's seat, rather than from up top. The cat location is an easy fix, but the flex pipe is a fair bit more work.

$40 weld, was flange to turbo from Cat pipe.
Removed it brought to my muffler guy, would not want to know what paying someone for the job would cost, prob over $600.

Reviving old Post, but good to know that it CAN be welded, the cat pipe just blew off the flange at the squirrel cage.
Thought I heard a slight rattle, full throttle blast identified the issue!

Re: Just got loud! Welded flange

Muffler King to the rescue! :-)
I indexed them with a touch-up paint brush
Better weld than I could ever do.
$50 weld, new O2 sensors on the way = quiet car back on the road!

Turbo/cat stud torque? Re: Just got loud!

Post by tombrisk » Sat Jun 27, 2020 8:02 am

Hoping someone has the torque spec to remount my V70 cat back on to the turbo? The studs are out, I'll thread them back in, but I'd prefer to not have to get back down there

Thanks for tips

Post by tombrisk » Mon Jun 29, 2020 7:53 am

I've ordered book(s), but could one kind board member supply the torque for the turbo to cat flange torque, please?
Guessing between 31-49 per a generic chart

A bit less.

20 Nm for the studs, 25 Nm for the nuts

Use new hardware for exhaust please, it’s the classy thing to do for the next gal/ guy.

Thanks abscate!
I received the O2 sensors yesterday, all I need now are smaller hands to get to the connections!
