2002 V70 XC Alternator

Post by a_scarang » Sat Jul 15, 2017 10:04 pm

My V70's alternator looks to have failed, just before I got home the car became sluggish and lights came on, the car turned into the driveway but couldn't drive up the incline... after shutting it off it wouldn't start again... an hour later the car started and I hooked up a multimeter and could see the voltage steadily dropping.

My Alternator part number is 8622786, it's a Bosch. Are there other alternators that are compatible with my car?

I went to the Volvo section of the upull it yard and all of the cars there (2001 S60, 2002 V70, and 2004 S60) had 8676498 bosch alternators in them.

Will this alternator work in my car? I brought one home and they look identical... can i remove the voltage regulator on mine and install it on the this one?

Thank you so much for your help.

At this age it makes very little difference installing used 15+ y.o. alternator, because soon it will have failed pulley and bearings.

Thanks. I am not sure how long the rest of the car will last so the alternator that I brought home for 30$ would be right for me if i get a couple of years out of it. I took it off of a 2004 S60.

I went ahead and installed it this morning and the car runs much quieter now, and it seems to have corrected the text on the inst panel but unfortunately it is not charging the battery.

Any ideas? Bad alternator? Should it be compatible? Is it worth swapping the regulator? Thanks.

Did you "side-by-side" the alternators? It proves nothing but feels good when they look alike.
Take it to an alternator shop for a real test. Maybe return it and have yours rebuilt?

How old is your battery? Did you at least FULLY charge the battery before installation?

There has to be an alternator rebuild shop somewhere in or near your city. A couple of years to amortize the price of a rebuild is OK. The trouble with junkyard units is that the donor vehicle may have spent the last months of its life being jumped, jumped by careless people and also run with near dead batteries.

Hi George. The two alternators look identical.

What I would really like to know is whether a bosch 8676498 (or other models) is compatible with my car.

Unfortunately not the battery. I fully charged the battery and tested, still draining. For good measure, I removed a known good battery from my wife's Volvo and it also would not charge.

In my mind, it is one of the following:
- Incompatible alternator
- Bad alternator
- Bad regulator
- Bad connection to alternator (nut was a bit oxidized)
- I did something wrong when installing the replacement alternator

It is hard to test these items because it means removing and reinstalling the alternator each time.

You didn't post your mileage on either website.
That would help a ton!

2004 has a different regulator to pre 2004. There are other differences which means it won't suit.

The car is at 285000 km.

I am planning to test the connection to the alternator tonight with a multimeter if I can figure out how to do that.
