So I need to replace the wheel bearing on my S70 and have looked at multiple videos online and read about the job in my Haynes book for Volvo 850. There seems to be multiple opinions about the lubrication part of the job when putting everything back together. The books says to put something called "metal glue"(my book is in Swedish, not sure if that is the correct translation) on the splines on the axel that goes into the wheelbearing hub. None of the videos have done this. After some googling I found out that what they could mean is some thread locker. Now what kind of threadlocker should I use? Red? Blue? Anti-seize instead? Grease? Nothing?

Also regarding the 4 bolts that holds the wheelbearing hub, I've read that the original is skrewed in with Anti-Seize, suppose I should use that for the new bolts.

Metal glue doesn't seem too much of a far-fetched anti-seize translation. Anti-seize has metal in it...

I have not read about using anti-seize on the threads of the wheel bearing 4 bolts as this would alter the torque setting.

Volvo do recommend a 'glue' for the splines on the axle shaft but most do without it as it makes removing the axle much harder. The purpose of the glue is to minimise any back lash in the splines. The glue can be bought from Volvo and looks like a runny green syrup. If you are re-using the original axle check for old glue in the spline grooves.

Yeah it sounds like it.

Okay, I was just thinking about it, they mention it here:
But it's true there is no mentioning of it in the book either.

I am using the old axle, so I might just skip cleaning the splines then, use the old one.

The metal paste for the splines is not anti-seize it is an adhesive just like it sounds, as Neil explains. Definitely do NOT use the metal glue.

I highly recommend using anti-seize on the splines instead, just the opposite of the metal glue. You will be grateful you did, if that axle ever has to come back out.

Because you are using the old axle (which is definitely the way to go!), cleaning the splines is more important, skipping that s a bad idea. Just go at them with a wire brush.

Alright, I will use anti-seize on the splines then! I probably have to take the axle off sometime when the gaskets blows.

I use a hooked sharp pick to gently scrape the old glue out of the splines. After this time it is mostly brittle and it comes out fairly easily.

You are in the world of the bastards...the 99- on models

In 1999, the front axle hub went to a single use, torque to yield bolt on the hubs, so you use it as it comes from Volvo. The install calls for light lube and torque of 50 Nm

The four hub Torx screws are also TTY, with light lube called for, initial torque of 65Nm and then 60 degree angle tightening. Thats really tight, btw. New screws called for here , too.

All the well-intentioned advice from 1998- friends is because they covet your sexy Italian throttle body...

OP does not seem to be asking about whether or not to put something on the hub bolts, but about the splines on the axle.

Another blow to my reading comprehension score...

Thanks Erik.

No glue or thread locker on splines. Definitely want to lube and/or anti seize the splines.
