When I come to a quick stop the transmission takes a long time to shift down into first gear. In normal driving the shifts are usually O.K.
I've done one preliminary fluid change with Dextron III. I understood that the 2000 model used Dextron III. Am I wrong? Does it have to have a special Volvo fluid?

Dex III is correct. I would do a series of drain and fills, not just one, and see if anything improves. The Valvoline MaxLife ATF is really good as is Mobil's synthetic ATF.
I haven't had much look saving a dying trans but it's been known to work so I wish you luck. Let us know how it turns out long term.
