I have a new old stock tensioner, Volvo part number 3517998. Blue box part. I'm changing the timing belt on my 95 and would use the blue box 3517998 if I had more confidence it is the right part.
From googling around I can see this is what Aisin calls the BTV002 tensioner, marketed for the 960 and the 93-94 850, e.g. https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/volvo- ... 60-3517998, but not for late 94+ 850 cars.
However this very reliable site says that 3517998 is good for any 850 with hydraulic tensioner: http://www.volvopartswebstore.com/produ ... 17998.html.
I've measured the part and compared it side by side with what Aisin calls a BTV005 tensioner, the one specified for 850s (e.g. https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/volvo- ... 70-9146693), and I can't see any external difference. The only thing I didn't check yet is length of the plunger, because I didn't want to pull the pin. I'll do that tonight I guess.
What gives, maybe BTV002 is spec'ed for more or for less hydraulic pressure than BTV005?
