Rough start and car dying on idle 04 xc70

Post by Thenextman »

Hey all,

About 3 weeks ago I had a check engine light come on while driving. Nothing out of the ordinary with regards to drive but I pulled over and cut the ignition to see if it would disappear on start. When I turned on the car again it had a reeally hard time starting and then died on idle. I startteed again, revved it at ~2500 for 20 seconds then drove home without issue.

I replaced the battery the next day as I knew the battery was on its last legs.

After replacing the battery everything was perfect for 3 weeks. The problem reappeared tonight - CEL, rough start and idle. Once I started driving, there was no issue (I.e. no stalling at lights or anything weird ), drives fine).

It's a 2004 XC70 with 215k kms on it.

Any ideas?

Thanks everyone.

Ok all here is the prognosis. Looking at approximately 3400 in repairs with tax to get the car fully fixed. Really don't know which way to go on this and would love your advice.

CEL is a fault in the throttle module - 720 for a rebuilt unit

Can pulleys are leaking oil on the timing belt - 1450 to get this all sorted (replace pulley, seals, belt)

Aux belt in bad shape - 325

Front ball joint 1 side - 175

Front stab links - 210

Front lower tables - 598

All canadian dollars.

Would you guys move forward with all of this on a 04 xc70 with 216k km on It?

I'm hoping I can only do half of these repairs at most and get another year / 20000 km out of it.

Thanks!

Oh yeh, much cheaper if you have tools.
Even if you have to buy tools.
I believe the xemodex throttle body repair is US$450.
Cam seals less than $20. I didn't replace pulleys on mine.
Timing belt, tensioner and water pump less than $150 ( don't recall exact cost but not exorbitant).
Acc belt and tensioner less than $80.
Ball joint under $60 ea.
Stabilizer end links? I just paid around $50.
Front lower tables? If control arm I paid approx 175 ea.
US dollars. total about $1K .

But thats why this forum exists, if we paid the shop to do everything we couldn't afford to own these cars.

The prices for the work are crazy high , even in ON.....if you can't do it yourself, find a good indie. You can probably buy the next 20000 KM for about 1200 CAD

Sorry guys! Didn't get a notification email in your replies. I've decided to lease a much crappier car that is on warranty. My preference would be to keep the xc70 as opposed to selling it for scrap... but it will depend on if I can secure a space for it. Unfortunately I don't have the time to dedicate to it right now, or the experience.

If you have any reccos on car leases around $450 CAD per month, would love to hear them!
