Weird gas pedal response

Post by jaces_dad »

My car, 2001 V70 XC70 with 144,008 miles. When i give gas to go up a hill, on the highway say, the tach goes up and the car starts to accelerate, then the tach drops and the car immediately slows down. this is not cool when merging into traffic... i'm wondering if it's a MAF sensor. My father seems to think it's the turbo actuator. Any thoughts at all? Thank you in advance.

Any other symptoms? any check engine lights or reduced peformance warning ?
Can you read any fault codes?

There are no check engine lights or codes. The car does surge at red lights and the rpms drop down to almost zero and jump right back up again but i don't now if these are all related.

Any service records? Could be a bad ETM.
Check the ETM. I believe the white labels are originals and the yellow labels are replacement units.
But even a replacement may have had time to wear out. The replacements were the original, bad (as in weak) style.

If it is the ETM go for a XeMODeX (brand name) rebuild. There's a "do-it-yourself" kit (replaces the weak parts) people talk about but I've never seen it in stock.

The ETM is a potential suspect, but there are other things that might cause this.
Some basic diagnostic work needs to be done before you $send the ETM away$ If diagnostics point to the ETM, then by all means pull it and get it rebuilt.

Areas to check first: fuel delivery, ignition coils/plugs, potential intake restriction, catalyst/exhaust restriction/excessive backpressure.
