So, on the XC 70... still waiting to see if electrical problems require the rebuild of the cem. We've noticed a whistling sound, mainly when accelerating, heavy on the throttle (not stomped to the floor... just a normal acceleration). It's seems like it'ssometimes louder when the wheel is turned, but I can't say that for certain. It's not steady... more warbly and low. If the radio was on you might not even hear it.

What things can I start to look for. I can't really remove the filler cap when I hear it, as it doesn't do it sitting still. It seems to me to be coming from in the cabin, but it certainly could be under the hood.

Thanks!

Pull out the dipstick a bit.
If the noise changes or goes away, it's a fully clogged breather
If not, I can't help you by reading about a noise

As above, also search on Youtube 'pcv test'

I also have a hissing noise when accelerating heavier, haven't found the source yet, I wonder if it's related with a vacuum hose or even with the brake booster.

The power steering pump can also get noisy if it doesn't have the proper (green color) fluid
