P0455 and P0442 Return... '98 V70 GLT

Post by bmdubya1198 »

Yeah, I know to check the usual suspects. I'm lost though.
I have checked absolutely EVERYWHERE for vacuum leaks, and there aren't any obvious leaks. I checked the J-hose, L-hose, the vacuum line to the purge valve, the line from the charcoal canister to the fuel filler neck (as well as the seal on the quick connect), and gas cap seal, the fuel filler neck seal, purge valve to manifold hose, all TCV hoses, CBV hose, brake booster hose, fuel pressure regulator hose, and whatever other hoses I can't think of right now as well as replaced the purge valve, and nothing has changed.
The car has an occasion rough idle, but only when warm, and it really isn't too rough as much as it is just odd. It will pulse up and down slightly, but only occasionally and only when the CEL is on.
What other places could there be a leak? The only thing I can think of right now that could possibly be leaking is the fuel pump seal, which I already replaced when I replaced my fuel pump.
When I removed the fuel pump access cover, I can smell a hint of gas (nothing TOO strong) but I figured it was from the little vent on the fuel pump housing. Is that normal or is that reason to re-seat the seal? I've re-seated it multiple times, and I don't think I can get it any straighter than it is.

I think when I ran into this, I had to replace the solenoid valve that's mounted on the radiator, between the canister and the intake vacuum.

Yeah, that's the purge valve. I replaced that already. Unless I replaced it with a bad one (which is possible), I don't think it's an issue.

It's less likely, but there could be a crack in the charcoal cannister or one of the check valves.

I'll have to take a close look at those. I guess anything's possible.

I've learned to live with my P0455 - mine only goes on in city traffic. I do mostly highway miles. I get it an average of every 3-4 weeks. I suspect mine could be the gas cap seal but haven't replaced it yet.

P0422 - does it smell like rotten eggs at the exhaust?
Wisdom requires knowledge as a prerequisite, but knowledge can be developed due to a lack of wisdom.
In order to learn how to fix something, you must first learn how to break it.

It actually does occasionally. Nothing too bad, probably closer to burnt carbon deposit smell.

No, I'm not replacing my cat :D .

I googled P0422 Volvo code and there are a bunch of different issues that have caused this. One unlikely one I would never have looked at is the air-intake sensor which had a broken clip on one side which threw a code only in city driving but not on the highway. Other issues were the rear O2 sensor, and a sensor measuring issue fixed by putting in a spacer in the rear O2 sensor.

Worth doing the google search and read the threads for further ideas as there are several.
