2004 Volvo S40 that when starts it'll stall after idling a minute.

Post by foosman »

I have a 2004 Volvo S40 that when starts it'll stall. It'll run for a minute or less before acting like it's starved for air. Keeps running real low rpm. I get the 2 codes that read, 1st P0339 and a 2nd code that is P0339 with a pd looking symbol next to it. P0339 which is a crank position sensor.

What I've Done So Far:
  • I have replaced it with two sensors and I still get the same result.
  • I've charged the battery & verified the connections to the connector are good.
  • When I test all the sensors' resistance and voltage the tests say they are good as well.
  • I've tested the camshaft sensor and connections too.
I see a lot of people have this issue on various volvo models but not many follow ups on what fixed the problem.

Thanks! for any help I can get.

Do you have the older models S40 with 4 cylinders or the newer model that started mid-year 2004 (which has 5 cylinders)?

Btw, it could be a bad connector to the sensor. I'm not sure what the current is supposed to be but you could probe the wires going to that sensor with a VOM meter to see what you get with key cranked to ignition (you'll have to have someone do this...while you probe it I would think.

It's the newer one with 5 cyl.

I'm leaning towards the computer for the engine.

My only thing with that is
1) If the computer was telling the fuel pump to shut down because it can't read the crank sensor, why do I still have full pressure in the fuel rail when it acts like it want to die.

2) I hooked up an Innovia 3100Lat OBD reader. It was able to read all system checks

Error codes P0339 and/or P0336 come back every time after clearing and then running engine again.

Could the Crank Position Sensor MOUNT be bad causing intermittent ground? It is plastic.

Thanks

definitely could be...whatever wire the sensor plugs into...not sure how to check this but look for Youtube videos on checking current and continuity for that sensor...although may not find Volvo, many are similar.
