4 years ago, I put a cheap catalytic converter and exhaust on my car. It has performed ok during this time, but now the catalytic converter has broken in half at the flex pipe. Are there any available used exhaust systems or reasonably priced stainless steel systems or should I just pay $400 or so every 4 years?

Thanks for all the continued help,

Feld

Field...have you looked at FCP for their options? They are offering lifetime warranty on a lot of stuff, I don't think exhaust is excluded.

They do sell exhaust but it appears like they don't list one for the NA engines which is weird. Maybe worth shooting them a message to see if they can supply one for that. They supply this for Turbo engines:

Unfortunately the aftermarket stuff does not hold up. The cat-back system I bought lasted 3 years. My 2000 V70 NA is now sporting a used Volvo factory exhaust from a 1995 850 turbo. It fits fine and has been on my car for a couple of years now.

I have used the Starla stuff on older Volvos in the past, but the one piece exhaust design for the V70 makes shipping an issue...

I am also looking for a better exhaust parts. My OEM mufflers and tailpipe are 3.5 years and 50k miles old. The tailpipe connection at the rear muffler just broke off, the tailpipe is rusting away, and the rear muffler is ejecting its fibers out the tailpipe. Perhaps I didn't wash the underside enough during the salty winters, but that doesn't explain why the fibers are falling out.

VolvoPartsWebStore has the OEM parts for a lot cheaper than they did three years ago. Front muffler 31372159 for $230, rear muffler 31372156 for $200, and tailpipe 31372153 for $50. Since I can't find stainless replacements, maybe I'll just buy these again and keep them cleaner during the winter.

How can so many aftermarket exhausts get away without having the rear muffler?

I did find this stainless exhaust by Ferrita at Skandix. Also, there's this stainless exhaust by Rakaror. But how do we get these in the USA?

Ferrita lists Viva Performance as their USA distributor. After some digging on Viva, I found the 850/V70 non-turbo stainless exhaust and the 850/V70 turbo stainless exhaust.

Wish I knew about this 3.5 years ago when I replaced all my mufflers. Hopefully they'll still be available in a few years when my OEM mufflers totally fail.
