H11 bulb socket

How common is it for the socket for the low beam (on my son's '07 S60) bulb to get messed up?
I went to replace a bulb on my son's car and the H11 bulb (90 degree angel) is stuck in the socket so bad that it would not come out. I then noticed that the socket had already been replaced once with crimped wires and tape holding the wires together. I ended up breaking the socket trying to get the old bulb out and so had to "hard-wire" the bulb to the extended wires. I then went on Amazon and ordered a new socket. This seems very strange to me...never had this happen with any other Volvo. I also noticed that the holder for his fog light bulb on the driver's side is broken. I don't even know where to begin on how to replace it...it's not the piece the bulb fits in it's the part connected to the car you twist the bulb holder piece into...there are little hand tightening screws that change the direction of the beam...the housing for the long screw is missing it's base and the long screw is just dangling.

I wrote a thread on my new P2 about a 4 hour bulb change that was caused by a bad bulb..there was a defect in the bulb base that locked it into the base. I easily could have damaged it
