2006 V70 rear wiper goes across, then stops and motor keeps buzzing

Post by jh_on_the_cape » Thu Oct 12, 2017 12:08 pm

When I do the rear wiper, it goes across the back, then stops and the motor keeps buzzing along. So it is getting power.
When I help the wiper along a bit with my hand, it keeps going and returns to its home. But it will keep buzzing until I do this. WIper stops almost all the way across on the driver side.
I thought the spline to the wiper arm was worn out, so I removed the wiper arm and tried again, same thing, even with no wiper arm attached.
Is the motor worn out? The motor is expensive enough that I don't want to just try it.

I put the arm back on for now, but if I forget it's broken and activate the rear wiper, it goes across and buzzes (like the gears are grinding) until I pull over and help it with my hand.

Thanks!

There is a large plastic cog inside the motor that is probably worn out locally which is why it works when you prod it. Yours is behaving exactly the same way as mine. You can find new 3D-printed cogs on ebay and replace it instead of getting a new motor. Its resonably cheap and easy to do.

Edit: The big white cog shown in the picture here: http://www.jagrullar.se/forum/viewtopic ... 5#p1028244
You can see the steel cog/screw attached to the motor at the top. This is where the plastic wears away.

I thought so, yes. I did it without any instructions, just took a picture before so that I could compare the result to something.

I greased the axle as well while I had it apart.

There isn't too much more information about actually doing it in Swedish in that thread anyway, I just knew it had the right picture. 15 pages about a wiper motor is kind of impressive though..

I couldn't either now. Had to find the seller through my ebay history. That particular seller seems to have launched a webshop of their own instead. http://www.materflow.com/en/store/buy/p ... -gearwheel

But I guess it should be possible to find someone who can print the cog locally if you can find the model somewhere on the internet.

I ended up buying a used wiper motor for cheap.

HI HI. On my 04 xc70 (which iv only owned for a little under a year), when I try and use the rear wiper intermittently it has like 4-5 positions that it will stop at on the rear windscreen.

I can almost trick the system by turning off the intermittent switch at exactly the right time to park it in the right space.

If I use it continuously seems to be fine, but again parking it in the same place every time can be tricky.

So I guess my big question is should I chase the wiring in the tailgate, or the motor itself (are there microswitches)?
Slightly smaller question is which side is the wiper supposed to be parked on? because I have seen it on both L & R sides.
