Polestar's first car is here: 600hp Hybrid, Carbon Fiber Body, GT 2+2

Post by matthew1 »

Polestar 1 debuts 600hp hybrid
Polestar also unveiled the 600hp Polestar 1, the company’s first car, which is set to roll off the production line in mid-2019. Polestar’s technology and product offering benefits from synergies and economies of scale enabled by the Volvo Car Group, helping Polestar to accelerate design, development and production processes at fraction of the time it takes other new entrants.
Strangely, you can't buy one.
Polestar will also move away from today’s traditional ownership model. Cars will be ordered 100% online and offered on a two or three year subscription basis. The zero-deposit, all-inclusive subscription will also add features such as pick-up and delivery servicing and the ability to rent alternative vehicles within the Volvo and Polestar range, all incorporated into one monthly payment.

I wish Volvo would focus on making cars again that didn't care what others thought. Now it seems like they need to be with the times. We need more of this... (which I'm just now finding out wasn't real  )

This subscription thing also kind of eliminates the need for buying a car. If you want a car on a subscription basis, why not just use something like Uber? I thought leasing was ridiculous, this is on a whole new level of insanity. Or it could even be looked at as a more convenient, better value lease. Too modern for me, and I'm in the age group they're targeting...

That ad is from this hilarious movie. If only I could remember it´s name.
I´m thinking the same thing. If I want to rent a car, make it a cab or a limo so I can party in the back and someone else pays for the speeding tickets (aka the driver).
I don´t want to rent my software, I don´t want to rent my house, I don´t want to rent my "wife" (not illegal over here) and I don´t want to rent my car. Maybe renting a car is good for people who just want to get from A to B, but why would they need a sporty Coupe with 600 hp for? Also, I´m not going to buy a Chinese built car, we need jobs too. Wait, they want us to rent it ...

Maybe I should buy another 850 just to be on the safe side.

"Crazy People" is the name of the movie. I'll have to go watch it now, hahaha.
That's the other odd thing about this rental/subscription concept. Why would you want a 600 hp sports coupe? It just doesn't make any sense. Anyone buying a car like that would most likely want to buy it, and if you're like me, you'd want it to be free of all the modern computers and electric motors.

Years ago (early 2000s) GM had that ugly electric car called the EV-1. It wasn´t all that bad, and some people wanted to keep the cars longer than the subscription/lease/rental period. No way. People had to return them, leaving them without an electric alternative except for the Toyota RAV which was offered as full electric car back then (I believe it was a RAV).

Society is definitely moving toward renting everything. I'm listening to a song on Apple Music service as I type, which is $10/month for every song I can think of, as much as I can stand. Last week I downloaded and rented Adobe Lightroom for $10/month.

Cars were naturally going to follow this.

Self-driving cars are going to change society significantly in 10-20 years. Some will be privately owned, but I think the majority will be rented as you need them. We're at the very beginning of that event.

As long as they don't make self-driving, rent-able cars mandatory. The government better leave my cars alone!

Jalopnik's article suggested that, should one really want to buy the coupe, there were hints that one might be able to do so for around $100k. I think that would make it the only current Volvo to not be 20% too expensive (with the exception of maybe the XC90).

Subscription aside, the old Volvo that produced the 240 and 850 etc has been gone for decades and will never return. As a Halo car for new Volvo, this thing is super cool. Maybe we can dream of this car being the precursor to a more conventional, more affordable S80 coupe.

I was just talking to someone today about how Volvo used to be almost Blue Collar with the 240. Now, not even close.

I liked the old Volvo much more. They just built good cars... didn't care how up to date styling was, didn't care that they had a weird number of cylinders, they were just good cars. Now, the new cars are beautiful, yes, but they're expensive and rather bland. I'm quite tired of every new car having a 2.0 liter turbo (or twin charged in Volvo's case) 4 cylinder. And for Volvo, that's the only engine you can get in anything. All of their cars having the same powertrain make it useless in my mind to offer more than one vehicle. And in this day and age, the only thing they'd sell would be the XC60. They don't even sell anything with a manual transmission! Let's not forget the Chinese own them and are starting to build them now.
Sorry, rant over. The auto industry is going to crap...
That being said, I wouldn't be opposed to a new C70. As long as it's not the same twin charged 4 cylinder and FWD. At least the 5 cylinder FWD modular platform of the P80-P2 days was interesting.
