Rear control arm link removal

Post by grntrdbx »

I haven't seen an easy way to remove the trailing arm links on an 850 or P1 car. I have an easier way that will save some time and headache. I went ahead and purchased the Volvo tool to remove the links from an online store that saved me about $100 from the IPD price (no offense IPD, I love you guys, but $100 is $100). I think the name of the online store is Euro auto tools or something (I'll have to get back with you on that). Anyway, the proceedure is pretty straight forward, Mercedesguy on youtube has a simple straight forward video if there is any confusion. Trust me, the old links don't come out that easily. After heating the first one with a heat gun for about an hour, I thought, why not drill out the rubber surrounding the steel inner part of the link. Lo and behold, by doing this you will also drill through the soft metal shell and release the pressure holding the link in the arm. Now use the Volvo tool and slowly pull the link out. Reinstallation will take a little longer, be patient and you may need a long rod or punch to tap the top of the new link shell in as you drive it in with the Volvo tool. The second one came out in about 10 minutes after drilling the rubber and shell out. Good luck, it was simple and saved a lot of time, and I didn't burn my car to the ground heating it with a torch.
