Cross Member ("Stay Bar") Purpose

Post by broadusc »

I recently swapped out the lower engine mounts and had to remove the cross member (30883224) Volvo calls the stay bar before removing the larger cross member the mounts attach to. It looks like it comes off and bolts back on easy enough, but I'm just wondering if there is anything special needed when reinstalling because I don't fully understand what it does. I just bolted it back in the same way it was installed.

It's number 7 in this diagram

I've had mine off a number of times though I can't remember specifically why.
Perhaps to remove the flex pipe?

Regardless, I never had any difficulty removing or reinstalling it either.
I've considered it a chassis brace. It appears to be there to support the left side and right side of the car from flexing in my opinion.

Thanks for the 2nd opinion. That's kinda where I was at too. It just looks like a brace
