1997 Volvo S90 with 90,000 miles - The orange lights next to the shifter are blinking between W and E and the UP ARROW on the dash is constantly lighted and blinking. The owner's manual indicates that if the UP ARROW is lighted, the transmission is in the W mode but a blinking UP ARROW indicates a problem in the gear box -- Also, a local shop told me the back up lights don't work because of a faulty shift indicator switch which I believe is or may be the NEUTRAL SAFETY SWITCH?????????
Any help or information would be appreciated.

It usually means that your car is in third/low gear If you have an automatic it is possible that your transmission is going into :limp mode" this is where the transmission starts in 3rd gear instead of first because it has detected a problem with itself, many times this happens because of a bad solenoid in the transmission.
