2002 S60 failure to start

Post by patmoore72 »

I have a 2002 s60 t5 that won't start and gives me a "Generic crank sensor" code. I have had it started, and it ran well. while driving it one day, it started bucking badly until I let the rpms drop below 2000. Then it would run fine until I tried to accelerate above 2000 rpms, then it would start bucking all over again. I pulled the etm and cleaned it thoroughly and replaced it. Now it won't restart and throws the P0336 code when I try to start it. I have replaced the cam position sensor with a new one and the crank sensor with a known good one. When I crank it over, it turns over normally and then acts as if it were kicking back and doesn't start. This vehicle has a 5 speed manual transmission.

I had a similar issue with bucking. Try disconnecting (unplugging) the MAF and see if it starts. If it does, you may need to replace your MAF. That was my solution.
Good luck.

If it is running poorly, don't put faith in the sensor codes about misfires and crank/cam sensors - all these things sense firing and determine problems based on crank rotation. If it is bucking and heaving, it will mess up the timing of these sensors and spit out all kinds of codes.

My 1999 sonertimes has a lumpy idle and will report a P030x which clears itself in about 50 miles, for instance, I used to get a knock sensor error but that just stopped happening.

I think you have the infamous Italian throttle body on your 2002 - try to get a picture of the white or yellow label on this for us.
