Burned valve. Car put to rest on driveway.

Post by kaneelschep »

So my 850 really has a burned valve. No idea about the state of the rest of the head yet.
I just didnt have the time, willpower and money to do anything on it at the moment.
Even though the Volvo didnt really let me down ever. It was quite the time and moneypit.
And if I start fixing now, the pit might overflow...
So it got parked on the last spot of my driveway. From the 3 in line...
This spot was formerly reserved to my Mercedes 500sec. And before that the Bmw 2002.
Strangely enough other people always like to refere to that spot as the slowly rusting to death and why dont you just get rid of it spot. Wich might have some truth in it.. But The Volvo isnt made of 70's steel and rubbers!
So it will probably survive till I scrape together the parts and time to fix or just lazily replace the head.

For now though, I got us a 2001 Audi A4 TDI. The 85kw pd engine.
So I almost stuck to Volvo.. Allthough with a passengercar tdi instead of the van engine.
This will nicely do 5L all day long. My airco is cold. the blower doesnt sound like a poltergeist. My feet got warm again while driving since a long time. nothing has started to moan, whine or squeek yet.
It does stink like children sick and rotten milk though. The wunderbaum doesnt help. that probably made it affordable.

But I do miss discussing my (frequent) volvo problems here. Since this is simply the best forum out there for car support!! No doubt about that! Every single problem on a volvo is covered in a topic, howto or youtube movie. And the knowledge of people here is outstanding.
The audi/vw fora just dont have this great knowledgebase. And are very full of..... Well.. Audi drivers! ;)

Ahwell. The volvo will rise again! I am sure. ;) Even the benz made it out of the spot alive! On a trailer.. To Poland..

love the SECs. the best thing is that their owners were the most likely to be investigated by the SEC. I've got a W124 coupe, which is nice, but the big coupes just scream 80s money.

My 1998 S70 GLT with 187K miles just burned Exhaust Valve #3.
- I unplugged the electrical connector to the Injector #3 to stop fuel from getting into the #3 cylinder.
- I am using this car as "grocery getter" LOL...for now. Don't know what to do yet: donating to refugees, selling it as "junk" or one of these days fix it.
- I posted the info in the "Burned Valves" thread. Apparently, some people drive their car with burned valves for 80K-100K miles!

That driveway spot sounds a lot like the one in our little corner of New Jersey. It's where my fixer-upper 01 Saab 9-5 V6 sat for two years without a turbo. My brother and I spent until 4 am one day soon after I bought it just getting the thing off. It felt like such a victory, though it took me nearly two years to get the new one back on.

Everyone, including my brother, urged me to scrap it, but I eventually got it all back together. A highway test drive was exhilarating, but it soon burst a hose and dumped all its coolant on a street in Newark. As I was going to register it. Though I replaced the hoses, it was dumping oil into the coolant, and, though tempted, I decided not to attempt a head gasket replacement.

Now the spot is reserved for a silver, MT, 2000 V70 that needs exhaust work (even though I enjoy the roar of an unmuzzled 5-cylinder that reminds me of a dragon)!
