DIY: 2005 XC90 2.5T Blower Motor Lubrication  Topic is solved

DIY: 2005 XC90 2.5T Blower Motor Lubrication

- My 2005 XC90 2.5T with 110K miles has squeaky Blower Motor when speed is set at “2 notches or so”. I know the motor needs lubrication. You need to fix this before the friction is too great, causing the resistor to go bad. The whole Blower Motor is $200 (Behr) to $300 (dealer).

- I had similar issue with my 1998 BMW 528i Blower Motor, and this trick (lubrication) works.

- This is a FREE Fix, this takes less than 1 h of your time, no need to remove Glove Box.

- Result: nice and quiet Blower Motor.

TOOLS:
- Torx Key #25
- Work Light
- Oil, lithium grease etc.

PROCEDURE:
1. Move passenger chair back. Remove key from ignition. Pull the trim outward. Remove the 2 T25 screws and remove the trim:

2. Look up and you will see this. Look around and you will see 4 screws, the 5th screw is hidden and you need to break the tab to remove it.

3. Press on the tab, then pry out the connector. There is a rubber hose (not shown): disconnect it.
I also d/c the connector to the courtesy light to prevent battery drain (optional).

4. In order to remove the Blower Motor, you will need to:
- Remove the three (3) T25 screws as shown, this allows you to pull on the trim work to remove the BM.
- Peel the carpet back to create extra space.

5. Just to show the resistor with 2 Torx screws.

6. The REAR bushing is easy: remove the Plastic Cover.
Then you will see the REAR bushing: one drop of oil, then lithium grease.

7. To lubricate the FRONT shaft, unless you have the tool to remove the plastic cage, you need to do it the redneck way: I added 3 drops of oil at 12 o’clock position. Leave it alone like that for 10 minutes (don’t disturb it, you want to oil to wick downward to the shaft).

8. At the end, do not forget to reconnect the electrical connector(s) and rubber hose.

That is it, boys and girls…

Enjoy the quiet Blower Motor!

Nice DIY about removing the blower. I tried too to lubricate the bushing bearings. Unfortunately it didn't last so I went and removed the fan wheel and damaged the motor in the process. Turns out, the upper bearing (it's actualy the one that gets noisy) was rusted inside so oil would only temporarily help. The bearing (it's a bushing bearing) needs cleaned with a wire brush. Even easier, used fan units are available for not much, just carefully look for one that has the metal tip in the center of the fan wheel not rusted.

CN90 - great instructional. Thank you! Please check back here; to let us know how long it lasts. Hope a long time but not sure if it is a band-aid or a solution. Either way... good stuff!

I did this lube trick on my 1998 BMW 528i 2y/20k miles ago, so far so good. As mentioned above, most blower motors run on bushing bearing (not ball bearing). Bushing bearing is used in my Bosch clothes dryer machine at home too. About 1-2 drops of oil is all you need.

Cuhfs, this is not band-aid, it is a solution. Hey it is FREE fix, why not?

Almost 4 weeks now, Blower Motor still nice and quiet.
As I mentioned before, these are not bearings but rather, they are bushings. So 1-2 drops of oil is all you need and this should last another 100K miles.
My BMW that I lubed using the same trick 2 years ago, still nice and quiet.

Thanks for the write up CN90. My fan just started squeaking so I'll try it this afternoon. I'll add a few drops of Break Free Oil. It's a gun lubricant that lasts much longer than 3-in-1 or motor oil.

Glad you find it useful.

It is now > 1 year since I did the DIY lubrication, so far so good.

Regarding the impossible 5th screw...

In this thread on an S60, this person habbyguy removed the 5th screw using a Right-Angle screwdriver:
