S70 Upper Motor Mount & Loose Cable?

Post by utilityaudio »

Greetings all,
I have a '98 S70 with 78k miles, I purchased it in October of last year with 72k but there was no record of the Timing Belt being changed, so I wanted to get it taken care of, and finally got it done the week before Thanksgiving. my mechanic changed the water pump at the same time.

I drove it on about a Thanksgiving Roadtrip for about 1k miles round-trip, and everything seems good.
however, while clearing a bunch of leaves out from under the Wiper Arms at my folk's house, I noticed that the Upper Engine mount has some cracked rubber

and that there's a cable that doesn't seem to do anything, and doesn't seem to have anywhere it should be connected to...

so my questions are:
* How quickly should I replace the engine mount(s)?
* What does this cable go to? there's no CEL, or any indicators that are lit on my dash.

Thank you!

The top engine mount is usually the first to go as it takes the most force from twisting (called the top toque mount). The center section should be attached to the outer ring of rubber. Looking as best as I can see it the picture, it is not fully torn out but getting close.

Also check the mount under the crank pulley on RH end of engine near the wheel. The rubber section tends to 'un-stick' from the metal plate it should be attached to.

Lastly there is a lower torque mount under the middle of the engine. There are 2 rubber bushes in it and often the rear one will fail with age. They may not all be bad, but have them checked and assessed.

There is a plastic piece stuck in the end of the connector which means you do not have the Volvo alarm system fitted. If you did that would fit to a small horn attached to the middle of the firewall where the rectangular slot is in the sound deadening behind where you are holding it. The clip probably clips on just above that slot.
