replacing strut mount

Post by veg2001 »

I have a bad strut mount on my 1989 240dl. You can turn the strut freely with a wrench, and it clunks up and down when I push hard on the front of the car over that tire.
My question is: How diffecult is this job? I have the new mount already. I did read in my Bently manual about removing the tie rod end, disconecting the anti roll bar, and then taking off the top nuts and leaning the strut spring to accsess it. I also have a pair of strut spring compessers I borrowed from a friend ( I have used them before, to replace the strut inserts on my 74 superbeetle) So I know to be careful !
Also what size is the top strut mount nut? I don't have a wrench that will reach down to turn it, so I need to go buy one. It looks about 21 mm, but I can't find the size in my book???????
Thanks -Scott

Scott,
If this is like the 240 you will never find a wrench that fits because it's a special tool that allows you to turn the nut and hold the top of the strut at the same time. If you have access to a compessor and an impact wrench, you can put a long socket on the nut and spin it out without holding anything. That is, if it's like the 240.
