2003 XC90 T6 flexplate replacement question

Post by joedesu1 »

Hi All,
Have a question. Knee deep in the flex plate repair for my car and literally went to remove the bolt that sits above the bevel gear flange but just below the turbos (basically very inaccessible) and it seems really tight. I can get a 1/2" driver and 14mm 6 point socket on there but it feel like the bolt is really hard to turn and will strip the head eventually. I tried heat, but its hard to get it to the spot. What I am wondering is shouldn't I be able to drop the transmission with the bevel/angle/chain drive still attached? Are there bolts being the said housing that need to be undone for the transmission to come off? I am about to drag the car to the street with my forklift and set it ablaze if this bolt means I now have to pull the engine. BTW it wasn't me who galled or damaged the threads. Not sure if the bolt is seized or the threads are bad but this is my first attempt at this repair, and everything thus far has gone well. Thanks!

I had the Angle gear out of mine a few years ago, but I didn't remove the trans. Is this bolt connecting the A/G to the Trans, or engine? Also, instead of pulling the whole engine, what about removing the bank 2 turbo assembly to improve access? I'm interested because unfortunately, I wasn't smart enough to have the RMS changed while the trans was out (at 125k-now at 185k)
Current Volvos:
1998 V70 T5, 112k sat 5 years, still in mechanical coma (finally at the top of the pile )
2004 XC90 T6 AWD: 186k, 60 on transaxle ( traded in )
1998 POS70 N/A: DD/training aid, 236k but really about 240k, I think...ABS module( passed on to son who sold it)
